Hi folks,
Can anyone please confirm the following ASAP please.
I am about to fit an after market ECU to my race track car and it needs a crank trigger for it to work properly I’m told. In order for me get this I need to fit a different flywheel from the normal 1.4 engine 36/2 pattern.
My question is this, can I fit a 1.6 flywheel with a 36/4 pattern along with a 200mm clutch for it to work...I have been advised I can but better just to check.
Thanks...Metrotel
Clutch and flywheel
Re: Clutch and flywheel
If your ecu recognises the later 36-4, then you can fit the 1.6 flywheel and clutch,
If it only recognises the earlier rover 36-2 then you can fit that 1.4 flywheel and still
fit a 1.6 clutch plate and cover as the clutch fitment is the same,
indeed MG standardised the 1.4 and 1.6 flywheel around the same time as the 8v
engine was discountinued.
Fyi, the rover 36-4 pattern is only for the 5AS security pattern as well as TDC referencing, hence
the early pattern with 3AS only needed TDC referencing as the anti-theft was only on the
starter inibiter (3 AS), and not injection and spark ign (5AS).
Dont fit the 1.1 flywheel as the cover location pins and plate surface area are unique to the 1.1 setup.
The 1.4 and 1.6 flywheels are the same for clutch fitment regardless of crank sensor pattern.

Re: Clutch and flywheel
Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply,
What I really need to know now then is how I tell the difference between the flywheels. Like I say, I need the 36/4 pattern...How do I identify that..is there a part No, count the teeth etc...!!
I am fitting an Emeralds ECU to my track car, non dizzy engine and have been informed I need the 36/4 trigger to run it.

Re: Clutch and flywheel
i would guess you just look at the teeth of the reluctor ring at the back of the flywheel and if you see 4 teeth missing it may be the right one. to be sure, 2 of them are 2 teeth apart, the other 3 teeth,
