where is the best position to mount an oil temp sensor in an a-series engine?
I was thinking to position it low down in the side of the sump. is it better to position in in the pressure side of the oil stream?

Re: a-series oil temp sensor, best position
depends on what you want to measure.
i like mine right at the oil filter housing. i remove the bypass valve, fit an aluminium plug instead and drill and tap for 1/8 NPT as it is the most common thread i found for aftermarket sensors.
i know MPi Minis use a sensor at the oil pressure regulator, but it doesn't react very quickly

Yes and measuring the oil temp going into the engine seems a good idea.
So you dont refit the bypass valve?

Re: a-series oil temp sensor, best position
yes, i leave it out. i even couldn't refit it as the temp sensor uses its place.
and as i replace oil and filters regulary and with quality parts i don't think i will ever run into trouble where the oil filter bypass would save anything. at least it didn't the last 15 years

Re: a-series oil temp sensor, best position
yes, but that is differential pressure. and if my oil filter would restrict the flow to create said 7 PSI of pressure drop i would use an other filter manufacturer.
