Cambelt on a 1.1

My 1993 1.1 has done 28000 since new and my questions are - I can't imagine that anyone still manufactures new cambelts for the K series 1.1 so all of the "new" ones must be NOS - is that correct? Therefore there seems little point in replacing my trusty old belt with another old untried perhaps OEM one. Haynes specifies 60000 miles or 5 years replacement period for the timing belt. What do you think? Also, has anyone ever had a belt snap on this engine? Mine is very well maintained and the coolant is new - cannot see the point of replacing the belt / pump / pulley just to increase my risk of an "incident".

I think you should take the top cambelt cover off and inspect the belt. if it looks fresh without any cracks etc. then you could go on using it.
on the other hand I am sure that cambelts are still manufactured. and also even if it is a NOS belt you get it will be several years and several thousand miles newer than your current belt. don't forget to change the waterpump also.

Thanks - I'll have a look and if it looks still fresh I'll leave it. If it's cracked or worse it'll have to go.

Looks OK from what I can see. The top cover on mine only reveals the sprockets and belt whilst they are still largely enclosed. I removed the top two torx screws and peeled it back since a couple of screws are missing. The belt looked well meshed onto the sprocket and the tension roller is shiny where the belt contacts and "brownish" at either side. The inside of the enclosure is dry. Getting at that bottom small bolt holding the cover on looks a pain though. One day I'll get the stuff together and change it - no hurry though.
