Steering alignment

Post by Re-Carbed »

I've just greased my four grease points and pumped up my suspension as the mud flaps were catching at the back when going over bumps. My question is - is it necessary to have the steering aligned after this? The steering feel different but that may be due to the car riding higher now.

Yes the toe settings Will change a bit with the ride height but the general feel og the car Will also. Maybe you should considder adjusting the ride height to standard if not allready done and then Have the toe adjusted. Do check for Play in the steering balls and passenger side of rack before adjusting toe.

Did some more pumping at the weekend as the drivers side was obviously a bit lower than the passenger side - now the ride heights are within 10mm of each other and the steering is lighter and it goes in a straight line so I've managed to avoid having the steering adjusted. The steering wheel is straighter too. It would have been easier surely to have a thin, slightly restricted side-to-side connection in the system so that the whole car settles with even pressure on both sides after being sat for a while - or even something with a valve in it to allow the pressure to be equalised with a control. Car lop-sided - open valve on level ground - car levels - close valve. Simple eh?

yes getting suspension equal in all corners are not necessarily easy. also considering that the suspension often has a different amount of shims under the front units depending depending on where the driver sits so you may get the height equal, but not the pressure, but this seems to be by design. I have many times looked at bathroom weights to put together a cheap diy set of corner scales and use those for setting up the suspension rather than the height alone, but haven't found any cheap 250kg weights yet :)
