Carb woes

I'm pretty fed up with the rotten KIF38 carb on my Metro. I like to be self-sufficient in dealings with my engine but try as I might, even with a new diaphragm, my carb will not run correctly. My question is whether this KIF38 can be replaced with another type of carb to make tuning easier? Yes - I could go and pay someone else to tune it, and hope that they do a good job (how would I know?) but I'd rather stay in control.

there is a lot of things to learn when adjusting carbs and fault finding them.
do you have a device to measure CO?

Hs4, what are you running ? They 're carbs at the end of the day.

Its a kif38 on a k-series

Its nearly impossible to get the settings right without a co-measuring device or years of experience. If the needle is wrong if the engine had been modified you need a lambda sensor put in. If the carb is worn out in any way its impossible All together

Thanks for the replies. The car is completely unmodified and has done just 35000 miles. Before I got it someone had removed the tamper plug from the mixture screw and messed with it. Now I cannot get the blend of air bypass torx screw / mixture screw and idle speed screw correct as there is so little info out there about the KIF38. I used to own a Rover 2000 with one 1 3/4 inch Su and it was simplicity itself - a mixture nut and idle speed screw. No-one has ever published a simple guide for the KIF and so everyone must be thrashing about like me. For instance, if you are supposed to use the plastic-capped butterfly to adjust the throttle butterfly valve so it is just completely closed and then set the idle speed using the "air bypass screw" to set the idle what about the solenoid operated valve when you press the throttle pedal? Nightmare the whole thing - can a HIF38 be used instead - has anyone done that? and what do other KIF owners do with their carbs or are they perhaps rightly going the way of the Dodo.
