Water ingress

Post by Re-Carbed »

My 1993 1.1 is taking on water! Well, it has since I got it and I cannot see how. The water is in the boot under the mat, at the side of the spare wheel on the left hand side viewing from the rear of the car. The water appears to be coming from above near the tailgate hinge, it then runs around the window recess and down into the boot by following a seam between to panels that is toward the rear bottom surface of the window. It then drops directly onto the side/wheel arch and lands in the corner of the boot where it then spreads out under the mat.

The same problem but with less water happens on the other side too.

Anyone else had this?

I have previously had problems with water getting in around the rubber seal of the rear opening windows and then getting into the spare wheel well that way. never around the tailgate. try spraying it with a garden hose while a person sits in the car. if it is the tailgate seal buy a new one, it is a common shape and size so you can buy it by the meter.

My rear windows are fixed so I'll try the hose thing.

sometimes water gets around the fixed window frames, also check the wiring flexi piping near the hinges.

There are drainage plugs in the spare wheel well, 2 small little rubber grommits near the wheel fixing bolt that can be removed to drain it. Might be worth leaving one missing to avoid build up.

Also the spare wheel fixing bolt threads might be rusty, so its worth greasing the thread.
